Old Cold War – New Cold War – Comparisions and Contrasts

  1. Both superpowers in the old cold war wanted ideological supremacy, however, in the case of the new cold war, ideological considerations are absent. China wants to gain economic supremacy while Russia wants to overcome the military dominance of the USA in global politics.
  2. Both USA and USSR were having matching strength and powers in economic and military fields during the cold war. The race for development of science and technology particularly space technology, star wars etc. was an integral part of the cold war. Whereas, presently there is no similarity between USA and Russia when it comes to economics and similarities are lacking between USA and China when it comes to military dominance though China is trying vigorously to match the military capabilities with the USA.
  3. Events of the cold war were including proxy wars, confrontations like the one during Cuban missile crisis, race for development of nuclear weapons etc. However presently, with the emergence of non-conventional warfare techniques, trade and hacking and other nonconventional warfare devices are used to overcome each other’s power and strength in new cold war.
  4. During the cold war there were two distinct military groupings, viz., NATO-led by USA and Warsaw Pact led by USSR. However such two distinct military groupings with such strength and power are absent in the new cold war.

Cold War Assignment – Manvinder

Define and explains the following terms’ connection to the Cold War of the past and/or current political conditions

Cuban Missile Crisis: The time when the US and the Soviet Union were the closest they had ever been to full out nuclear war. The Soviet Union promised to protect Cuba from the US at all costs, which resulted in them planting Nuclear Weapons in Cuba. The crisis came to an end when Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev promised to remove the missiles if the US would respect Cuba. This strengthens the relations between Russia and Cuba.

NATO: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It is a military treaty between Several North American and the European States. During the Cold War, Nato focused on limiting the spread of communism, especially after the onset of the Korean War. Today, Nato continues to work against Russia and try to prevent it from taking over European countries

NATO article 5: If a country attacks any NATO nation, they are attacking every member of NATO. US today is increasing military personnel in Slavic Nation, to protect them from any future threat from Russia.

Doomsday Clock: The doomsday clock is a representation of how far we are from nuclear annihilation. The clock was created by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists who were previously scientists working on the Manhattan Project back in 1945. In 2017, the clock was set to 2.5 minutes to midnight, the point of expected nuclear armageddon. (The Bulletin moved the clock down 30 seconds all because of Trump’s statements of deploying nuclear weapons) This was the closest the clock has been set since 1953 when it was down to 2 minutes. (Both the US and Soviets tested their first nuclear weapons within 6 months of each other)

Iron Curtain: The Iron curtain was the name for the boundary Europe into separate areas from the end of WWII in 1949 until the end of the Cold War in 1991. The term is a symbol for the efforts by the Soviet Union to block itself and its satellite states from open contact with the West and Non- Soviet- controlled areas.

Warsaw Pact: Warsaw pact is a military alliance of communist nation in eastern Europe. It was formed in 1955 in answer to NATO. The Warsaw pact included Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union.

Nuclear Arms Race: During the Cold War the Soviet Union and the US were competing to become the most powerful country. To become the most powerful country US and USSR were producing warheads at an alarming pace, everyone was preparing that if one side started something, the other side could equally respond.

Mutually assured destruction: If one country attacks one, the other country will retaliate, resulting in utter annihilation. Basically, if they’re all going to die, might as well have the thrill of shooting your own nukes back and destroy any potential for survival. During the cold war, there was a huge rise in nuclear weaponry, the USSR and the US were constantly ready for the other one to attack. And if one did there would be bombardment right back on enemy territory.

Proxy Wars: When nation fund smaller regions to fight on their behalf, although indirectly. Vietnam and Korea were examples of proxy wars, where one side was supported by Communists while the other was supported NATO. USSR supported North Vietnam and North Korea, while the US-funded South Korea and South Vietnam.

Dissent: The Expression of opinions at variance with those previously, commonly, or officially held.

State-run Media: Where the country runs its media, it makes the people watch and listen what it wants them to listen. The state runs everything. F.E. Today North Korea has state-run media, the state controls, and reviews everything that is broadcasted or published.

Propaganda: Mislead or biased information used to promote a particular political cause or point of view

Sanctions: a threatened penalty for disobeying a law or rule. With all the sanctions imposed on Russia, it is struggling to rebuild its economy. The Russian Ruble is on a constant drop, and Russian economy is destroyed.

Net Neutrality – Current Events – Manvinder

Net Neutrality is the simple precept that forbids net carrier vendors like AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon from dashing up, slowing down or blocking off any content, packages or websites you want to apply, and rather sell their personal websites so you need to purchase their products to maintain your internet speed. However, Net Neutrality is being thrown away and service providers could be able to call their very own pictures and determine which websites, content material, and packages prevail. These businesses can now slow down their competitors’ content material or block political evaluations they disagree with. They can charge extra prices to the few content corporations that can afford to pay for preferential support with a purpose to start relegating absolutely everyone else to a decreased tier of a provider. Opposers of net neutrality need the website or consumer to pay a top rate to fast-track streaming from one website. The Federal Communications commission vote concerning internet neutrality was done on December 14, 2017. In a 3-2 vote, the FCC authorized a way to get rid of net neutrality regulations. The vote eliminated the Title II designation which now prevents the FCC from putting net neutrality regulations into effect. The new regulations allow tons more flexibility for internet vendors. They can prioritize any website they need to, so long as they publicly nationalize it. Without internet neutrality, ISPs are unfastened to manipulate what the general public can get admission to at the internet, because of this they’ll have the power of blocking access to certain websites. This will permit them to price clients more for special bundles to get entry to blocked websites. ISPs may also be capable of managing the speed you can download or upload matters at, relying on the package deal you pay for. This means they’ll be allowed to charge you extra cash to access websites which you could view for free now and redirect you from websites you presently use to websites they need you to apply. They may additionally block you from gaining access to apps and websites controlled by other organizations and competition. Lastly, this can also depart an impact on agencies. For instance, this can result in an “Internet fast lane” which would permit businesses to pay more so readers can have quicker get right to entry to their websites. Although this would advantage large businesses, it would also harm smaller groups and websites.

Socials Outline – Authoritarianism

What conditions are making other countries turn toward authoritarian leaders?

Conditions

  • Look threatening and scare off people from war
  • They covet all the power they can get
  • Voters (people) feel they need dominant leaders over respectable ones to control economy, as respectable leaders lead voters to feel economic uncertainty. So, they vote for authoritarian leaders.

Introduction

Thesis: While people are oblivious, many countries throughout the world are turning towards authoritarianism. It may seem that this is due to the force of the leaders, however, voters are favouring authoritarian leaders. Citizens turn to authoritarian leaders for their threatening appearance, desire for a dominant leader, and the desire for a mass power country. Furthermore, the authoritarian leaders are benefitting from this as well, due to their desire of power being fulfilled.

Body Paragraph 1 – Trump

President Donald Trump has been a big media talking point for quite a while now, and it’s not necessarily a positive connotation. Due to his unorthodox decision making, Trump has caught the eye of worldwide media and is making news every week. It seems that most Americans are not supporting Donald Trump, however, they still voted for him in the elections. While there may be a conspiracy theory where Russia rigged the elections for Trump, the voters knew the impacts of voting for Trump, yet they still went on with their actions.

Supporting points:

  • When political psychologists talk about authoritarianism, they refer to a temperament where citizens value acceptance to authority figures, and are aggressive towards protesters, or “nonconformists.” In 2012, surveys were done across the United States to determine the authoritarianism views of citizens. In the survey, they measured the authoritarianism of citizens on a scale of 0-1, 1 being highly authoritarian. Subsequently, the survey released a point where the higher on the authoritarian scale citizens were, they often supported the far right-wing authoritarian leaders, which were the racists and fascists.
  • Furthermore, the levels of education make a huge impact in voting. In the same survey, levels of education of citizens was also determined and displayed whether they were likely to vote for authoritarian leaders. The survey showed that the higher the education level, the less likely people were to vote for authoritarian leaders.
  • However, there are people who are highly educated and are impartial, yet they also voted for Trump. The reason for this would be the incompetence of other leaders running for president. For instance, Hillary Clinton was not appealing for citizens, as the American citizens required a strong and threatening leader. Voters wished for a leader that could voice his opinions and others’ as well. Donald Trump had all the requirements for the citizens, which led to the victory of Donald Trump becoming president.

Conclusion – Based on recent research US, it is evident that many citizens voted in favour of Trump due to desire for dominance, fear of outsiders, and desire of a great and controlled economy.

Body paragraph -2 – Jinping

Topic statement: Alongside Donald Trump, Xi Jinping displays an authoritarian government in the Republic of China.

Support – Xi Jinping is one of the most powerful leaders of China since Xiaoping. However, Jinping is a considerate leader who has faith in the citizens of China, not necessarily himself alone. Alongside that, Jinping also carries a lot of power and maintains his power consistently.

  • Jinping desires for his country to thrive through all stages of global progress, however, Jinping wishes to reform multiple aspects of Chinese politics. Furthermore, for Jinping, political reform is a prerequisite for economic reform. Jinping’s motive in pursuing modernity is not, as many have wrongly inferred, to establish China as a superpower on par with the United States; on the contrary, Xi views his current challenge and mission as being primarily domestic. He is motivated by the knowledge that success in this area will define his place in history. So, since Jinping is China’s most powerful leader since Deng Xiaoping, Jinping can shape his legacy according to his own vision.
  • Due to Jinping dealing with domestic security threats, his authoritarian power is being supported by citizens of China. However, his actions are being viewed as self-centered, specifically clarified by media, Xinping is trying to “turn China in to a superpower, “ on par with the US. However, Jinping is not impacted by media and continues his mission as it is primarily domestic.
  • While there can be many inferences made from his actions, Jinping is motivated to improve China and successfully lead it into a thriving state throughout the changing world. However, the method chosen for the mission is more centralized on an authoritarian form rather than a peaceful form, leading to an authoritarian government being supported by the Chinese.

Body paragraph 3 – Maduro

  • Due to an economic crisis, Maduro is leading Venezuela to an authoritarian government to overcome the crisis. Furthermore, many people support Maduro and his decisions since they believe the only way to escape the crisis, is to claim power and order, and a dominant leader.
  • Subsequently, one of Maduro’s supporters displayed his reasoning for supporting Maduro. Alberto Mathison states, “I actively participated [in the demonstrations] because I believe in having peace in our country.” Mathison believes Maduro is the appropriate person to lead the country out of their economic crisis due to his ability, agility and capacity.
  • Alongside Mathison, Kruspcaya Padilla is another supporter of Maduro. Padilla quotes, “I’m not an active militant, and I don’t belong to a specific political party, but I see the world from a humanist, leftist perspective. I believe in the people’s right to take decisions.” While being indulged in an economic crisis, Venezuela also encountered a political uproar.
  • Furthermore, an issue rose where oil was being sold at $40, whereas oil’s price should be near $100. However, there have been no budget cuts, layoffs, school shutdowns or hospital shutdowns.
  • While leading Venezuela out of its difficulties, Nicolas Maduro is becoming a dictator as he takes action. Although Maduro requires massive power to overcome their situation, Maduro’s actions seem to define him as an autocratistic tyrant. For instance, Maduro has thrown political opponents in prison, destroyed protests with utmost force and postponed significant elections to avoid threats to his power. Responding to these actions, Maduro has justified his actions as necessary to escape their situation, since a political party requires a lot of power to make decisions.

Trump Causes Tension Between US and England – Retweets Islamist Tweets

Recently, Donald Trump retweeted multiple tweets of Islamic action. Furthermore, Trump shared three tweets from one of the leaders of Britain First, an anti-immigrant group based in the U.K. It is rare for British authorities to publicly condemn the US, however, the UK government declared that Trump should not have retweeted those treats, displaying Trump’s actions in a negative perspective. The Special Relationship, a special relationship between the US and UK, the term was used by Winston Churchill. These actions by Donald Trump have impacted that relationship massively. However, Donald Trump’s actions on Twitter only reflect the person views of Trump, not all of the United States. Furthermore, US citizens do not want to damage the allied relationship between the UK and US, however, Trump is not helping, since he retweeted and argued with Theresa May. Subsequently, Trump tweeted this, “Theresa@theresamay, don’t focus on me, focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom,” the US president tweeted on Wednesday evening. “We are doing just fine!” However, it is obvious Trump and his country is not doing fine. However, it seems as if Donald Trump is inciting Theresa May and the UK government, by directly attacking their way of ruling and Theresa May herself. Furthermore, this has now caused a lot of tension between the US and UK. However, it does not seem like this will cause massive changes, for instance, the UK won’t break their status of allies due to a silly twitter act by Trump and May. However, Trump has not taken long to deter relationships, so this possibly continues into something worse, and could possibly cause some problems in the future, such as breaking their relationship status of allies or even cause war. As Trump looks as if he will start a war with the Koreans, and the UK might not support Trump.
